Staff Sergeant Barry Sadler was a United States Army Green Beret medic, musician, and author. He is best known for his hit song "The Ballad of the Green Berets," which was released in 1966 and became a Number One hit in the United States.
Sadler served in the Vietnam War and received a Purple Heart for injuries sustained in combat. After his military service, he pursued a career in music and recorded a number of albums, many of which were themed around the military and patriotism.
In addition to his music career, Sadler also wrote a series of novels based on his experiences as a Green Beret. The first book in the series, "Casca: The Eternal Mercenary," was published in 1979 and became a popular series among fans of military fiction.
Sadler's life took a tragic turn when he was shot in Guatemala in 1988 during a dispute over a woman. The gunshot wound left him paralyzed from the waist down, and he struggled with health issues for the rest of his life. He passed away in 1989 at the age of 49.
